Word: Creating a quick Table of Contents (TOC)

Create a quick, and easy to update, table of contents in Word using these 8 easy steps.

  1. Apply a Heading Style (from the Style gallery on the Home tab of the Ribbon) to each of the titles within your document that you want to appear in the TOC. By default, Word will only display items marked with a heading style 1-3.
  2. Place the cursor where you want the TOC inserted in the document
  3. Select the References tab, then click the Table of Contents button
  4. Select the Table of Contents layout you want OR
  5. Click Insert Table of Contents at the bottom of the window
  6. Click drop-down arrow next to Formats and choose a style
  7. Ensure custom header styles are picked up in the TOC by clicking the Options button, then in the dialog box, ensure that a hierarchy number is assigned next to any custom headers in the TOC level field, then click OK
  8. Update a TOC by clicking the Update Table button or by pressing F9
