Excel – Disappearing Grid Lines
(See our updated post with 4 reasons your Excel gridlines have disappeared.) There are 2 possible reasons your gridlines have disappeared. First, gridlines might be turned off in Excel Options. Simply click on Page Layout, and put a check in View under the Gridlines box. You can even print your grid lines here by checking Print in the same box. But what if View is checked in Page Layout? There is another possibility. |

Do you know how to change the default gridliines or fill in excel 2010. Have an situation when excel 2010 is opened there are no gridlines displayed. All checks for gridlines have been verified so that is not the problem. Default gridlines are set to white. How can you permanently change the default so it will open displaying gridlines.

I have this problem as well. I have checked the options and fill box, but its almost like my screen is too bright or something. I can almost see the gridlines, but not good enough. This is driving me crazy!!!

If you by chance have adjusted you settings on your monitor, ie brightness and contrast. If the contrast is up near 100% it will cause them to go away. I went through all the online settings only to find out it was the contrast setting on my monitor.

All the solutions on the net failed me but unplugging my laptop and plugging it back in allowed me to see the lines again. No idea why it worked just putting this up in the hopes it saves someone the time I lost figuring that out.

For users of the older, non-fancy-pretty-coloured, less bulky, less newbie-oriented Excel versions,
1. Mark everything by clicking the empty cell at top left of your spreadsheet.
2. Click on Format.. then on the Cells option,
3. Click on the dotted line type at top left (or whichever you want), of the window on the right then..
4. in the window on the left, click the three horizontal lines and the three vertical lines. OK and you’re done.

Never would have thought to look at the “fill” color. Worked like a charm. Thanks!

This is so helpful. Thank you

The contrast setting on my monitor was at 100. Lowering it will bring the lines back.
